Resilient display by the 6's

Facing an experienced Blackheath side, the Ops knew they would need to be on their mettle from the off. They started brightly, passing the ball well, with solid transfers around the back by Daniel Andrews, Simon Jones and Dave Brazier. The free flowing passing then began to progress forward, releasing Finn Letley and Arthur Ireland down the wings, with skipper Steve Letley and Paul Andrews dominating the middle of the park. As the game progressed, the Ops were looking more and more dangerous further up the pitch, with Jake and Joel Davidson findings good pockets of space out wide, and feeding the evergreen Deryl Gilham Jones in the middle. With Joseph Allon and Oscar Daley entering the fray, the Ops really turned up the pressure, and got their reward when a powerful run from deep by Andrews Sr saw him with space at the top of the circle to smash the ball into the far corner. From there though, things changed, with the Highwaymen starting to get on the front foot. A well worked move saw them equalise almost immediately, and then 2 more goals followed in quick succession, despite some sterling defensive work and good saves by keeper Aaron Main - 3-1 down at halftime for the Ops. An inspirational half time team talk by Letley Sr saw the 6's start the second half at a blistering pace, with some surging runs down the wing by the younger (and somewhat fitter!) members of the team. A short corner was earned, and when Gilham-Jones strike rebounded off the post, Andrews Sr was on hand to power the ball in, via an unfortunate defenders chest. Game on! The very next short corner saw Gilham-Jones find the backboard this time, and the Ops were rampant! From 3-1 down, to level pegging in the blink of an eye, and they did not let up. Some of the passages of play from the Ops were scintillating, and from one of these a wonderful 4 pass move saw Joel Davidson perfectly pick out his brother Jake in space, who took a touch before perfectly placing his shot in the corner, to gives the lead back to the Ops. The next goal was all about Letley Jr, with his pace carrying him through the 'heath defence like a hot knife through butter. His first shot was well blocked by a defenders stick, and ballooned up into the air. Letley Jr remained cool as a cucumber, waiting for the ball to bounce before smashing home on the half volley! A stunner! All credit to the Highwaymen though, as they continued to push for goals, and the Ops were indebted to Main for some fine saves, and Andrews Jr, Jones and Brazier for some stout defensive work. The opposition scored a 4th to make the final few minutes a bit nervy, but the Ops held out to secure an excellent comeback win, that displayed some real character.
