Moving forward from their battling draw with Marden 3s a week prior, Folkestone faced the notoriously dogged defence of New Becs. Injuries further up the ranks and a recent departure from the squad left Folkestone with the ideal opportunity to scout fresh talent. Step up debutant Theo Coombs with an inspiring midfield performance decidedly worthy of man of the match and demonstrating the continued success of Folkestone’s youth system that the senior teams can draw from.
Folkestone made a strong start to the match, however, were unable to convert several opportunities until part-time attacker Jack S. Hagger converted a vital chance from close range with his usual nonchalant style so frequently observed in his defensive duties.
The second half was far more commanding from Folkestone with an exceptionally precise flick to the bottom corner from the top of the circle from Nick Ward before a Sam Ireland strike sealed the game in the final 10 minutes. The Folkestone defenders should also be commended for another clean sheet, stifling any threat early on with only one pulse-raising attempt of note to deal with.
Marden’s draw at Canterbury leaves Folkestone two points clear at the top of the table, setting-up what will surely be an exciting race to the finish line and the opportunity of consecutive promotions.
